Edsel Ford first used the term "Falcon" for a more luxurious Ford he designed in He decided the new car did not fit with Ford's other offerings, so this design eventually became the Mercury. Towards the mids, all three manufacturers realized that this strategy would no longer work. Large automobiles were becoming increasingly expensive, making smaller cars such as FiatsRenaultsToyotasand Volkswagens increasingly attractive.

Furthermore, many American families were now in the market for a second car, and market research showed women especially thought the full-size car had grown too large and cumbersome. At the same time, research showed many buyers would prefer to buy US or Canadian if the domestic manufacturers offered a smaller car with lower cost of ownership. Studebaker also introduced the Larkand Rambler downsized its near-compact American in McNamarawho commissioned a team to create what by American standards of the time would be a small car but elsewhere in the world considered a mid-size.

McNamara, who was promoted to Group Vice President of Cars and Trucks by the time the Falcon was launched, was intimately involved in development, insisting on keeping the costs and weight of the car as low as possible.

Engineer Harley Copp employed a unibody atop a standard suspension and sourced parts from Ford's existing bin to keep the price low while providing room for six passengers in reasonable comfort.

The sales success of the conventional Falcon along with slow sales of GM's rear-engined Corvair led General Motors to introduce their own compact car based on the Falcon's principles, the Chevy II. Unibody construction accommodated coil springs front suspension, leaf spring rear suspension and drum brakes front and rear.

There was room for six passengers. The Comet, originally intended for the defunct Edsel marque and based on the Falcon, was launched in the US in March By the Comet adopted more Mercury-based styling and was folded into the Mercury line as the Mercury Comet. The market shift which spurred the development of the Falcon and its competitors also precipitated the demise of several well-established marques in the lates and earlys. Besides the infamous tale of the Edsel, the NashHudsonDeSotoand Packard nameplates all disappeared from the marketplace.

InFord's Canadian subsidiary introduced the Falcon-based Frontenac. It was designed to give Mercury - Meteor dealers a smaller model to sell, since the Comet was originally intended as an Edsel, which was sold by Ford-Monarch dealers. Produced for the model year only, the Frontenac was essentially a rebadged Falcon with its own unique grille, tail lights, and external trim, including red maple-leaf insignia. Robert McNamaraa Ford executive who became Ford's president briefly before being offered the job of U.

Defense Secretaryis regarded by many as "the father of the Falcon". McNamara left Ford shortly after the Falcon's introduction, but his faith in the concept was vindicated with record sales; over half a million sold in the first year and over a million sold by the end of the second year. Ford boasted of the good fuel economy achieved by the six-cylinder Ford Falcon models in advertising.

The model year had a Squire model of the four-door station wagon with faux wood trim on the sides. The bucket-seat "Futura" model was offered with a slightly upgraded interior, factory-installed safety belts, different side trim spearsand different emblems. Halfway through the model year, Ford changed the roof line at the back window to more of a Thunderbird design and offered a four-speed transmission for the first time.

The two-door Futura sedan also referred to as an 'illusion hardtop' because of the chrome trim around the side window opening sported a flat rear window in place of the panoramic wrap-around window on earlier models to bring its design in line with other Ford cars of the era. Ineven more models were available. There was now a four-door Futura and a Deluxe wagon. Futura Convertible and Futura Sports Convertible models were also included in the range.

The Falcon was climbing in trim level from its budget beginnings, as Ford attempted to wring more profit from the line. The second generation Falcon, launched infeatured revised, more squared-off styling. Later in the model year, Ford's new offering for that market was launched: the Ford Mustangbased heavily on the Falcon's unified frame design.Super clean in and out. Previously produced as a cargo van and passenger van, the E-Series is currently only offered as a cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis a chassis without bodywork.

After the model year, the E-Series cargo and passenger vans were discontinued and replaced by the Ford Transit. The first generation of the Ford Econoline made its debut on September 21, While introduced alongside the Chevrolet Corvair van forthe Ford Econoline established many design precedents adopted by successive designs of American vans, including the Chevrolet Van and Dodge A and the European Ford Transit.

The first-generation Ford Econoline was based on the Ford Falcon compact car range. To accommodate its inch wheelbase the shortest for a Ford sincethe Econoline adopted a mid-engine configuration, placing the engine behind the front axle; consequently, the layout precluded the use of a V8 engine. Ina cubic-inch inline-six became the optional engine, with the six becoming standard. A three-speed manual was standard, with a Dagenham four-speed manual introduced for and discontinued in ; the cubic-inch engine was offered with a 3-speed automatic in and the larger two engines were both offered with a 3-speed automatic as an option thereafter.

In contrast to the Falcon, the Econoline was fitted with a solid front axle and a solid rear axle suspension with leaf springs for all four wheels. In its layout, the Ford Econoline adapted several elements of the Volkswagen Type 2, while making major departures with other design features, with many elements of its design derived from its mid-engine layout. In line with Volkswagen, the Econoline positioned the front seats above the front axle, making it a cabover -style configuration, similar to the Jeep Forward Control.

Other elements of its design were borrowed loosely from the Ford Thames E produced by Ford of Britain the predecessor of the Ford Transitincluding its grille configuration.

The use of a mid-engine layout enlarged the cargo area, as the engine compartment was relocated forward of the load floor which was flattened. Through its production, the first-generation Ford Econoline was offered in several variants, with four versions of the cargo van.

Along with the 6-door windowless cargo van, Ford introduced an 8-door cargo van inadding two doors to the driver side.

Alongside the Ford Falcon, the Ford Econoline was expanded into a product line including several vehicles. In Canada, the Econoline was marketed through both the sales networks of both Ford and Lincoln-Mercury as a Mercuryto increase its presence outside of urban areas. Introduced alongside the cargo van inFord introduced two passenger variants of the Econoline branded as part of the Falcon range. Introduced as part of the Econoline model line forthe Ford Econoline pickup truck was based upon the cargo van.

Sharing the forward-control configuration of the Chevrolet Corvair pickupthrough its mid-engine chassis, the Econoline pickup truck saw no engine intrusion into the cargo bed.

Although, in with the offering of the larger cubic-inch engine there was a slight intrusion into the cargo bed providing clearance for the larger transmission bellhousing. The Econoline pickup was offered in two window configurations: 3 windows and 5 windows with windows in the rear cab corners to provide better visibility.

Early in the pickup was offered as a Spring Special with a special trim package. While far shorter than an F, the pickup was configured with a seven-foot long cargo bed. The Econoline pickup was only produced during the first generation of production, ending production after the model year.

InFord projected the pickup leading the van in sales; however, buyer preferences weighed heavily towards the van configuration. The pickup accounted for only ten percent of Econoline production. Alongside the M-series truck line, the Mercury Econoline allowed for Ford of Canada to maximize its presence in rural areas served by either a Ford dealer or a Lincoln-Mercury dealer, but not both.Hotels were comfortable and meals were good. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and told us interesting stories. I have never heard of Iceland sagas before this trip. He was so enthusiastic about the Northern Lights.

I am so glad I saw it and he took a photo of us for our remembrance. After seeing it on 15 April he still continued to go out on subsequent evenings to see if we could view it further as he said that might a chance to see it. That was commendable although we did not see it again.

Nordic Visitor is a knowledgeable, competent and effective travel agent for Norway. Its suggested itinerary for southern Norway produced an enjoyable and memorable experience that leaves one wanting more of Norway as well as other countries in which Nordic Visitor specializes. It was well organised - all arrangements timed perfectly - good background information in the itinery We thought our guide was absolutely wonderful. I loved all of it, and I appreciated the amount of time we spent as a group and also the time to be on our own.

The transportation from city to city was excellent, and the ferry ride to Oslo from Copenhagen was fantastic. Everything in the itinerary was in place and there were no hassles. All the hotels selected by you were wonderful. Overall a wonderful experience. Helga, our tour consultant, went above and beyond with her service. We really appreciated the detailed maps she had for us in our package.

She gave us lots of options and ideas for things to do as we traveled - even marking places where we could get homemade ice cream along the way. We enjoyed our trip so much that we stopped in to the office at the end of the trip to thank Helga again.

We even made a video clip, telling about some of our great experiences. Iceland is a beautiful country. This tour was a perfect way to share the beauty and the friendliness of the country.

It made it more of an adventure to self drive, go our own pace, choose our own sights, but all the while with the security of excellent support materials provided by Nordic Visitor.

Some sites near Reykjavik were crowded with tour buses but around the rest of the tour, we could still be much less crowded and enjoyable, and even alone at many places. I would like also to mention that Kristin put this whole trip together for us with only 5 weeks notice, well done.

We were very impressed with how smoothly everything went. Nordic Visitor did an excellent job of organising our trip. We just gave them our dates of arrival and departure and everything else was handled for us.

This allowed us to focus on sight-seeing rather than worrying about routes or accommodations. You can only see so much in a week though, so I guess we'll have to come back to this amazing destination.

Although we have travelled a fair bit in various parts of the world, never have we had a vacation where, each night we sat down and listed off all of the things we'd never seen before-glaciers, geysers, volcanoes-hot springs- each day was filled with marvellous sights.

We loved our entire package with Nordic Visitor and our tour guide was fantastic.
